A Brief History

With decades of experience in real estate on Martha’s Vineyard, Joan Dunayer purchased Martha’s Vineyard Home Rentals in 2001. She teamed up with Skip Dostal, and in 2006 the two acquired an established island real estate firm, Martha’s Vineyard Real Estate. Over the years, they have put their business acumen, people skills and island expertise to good use. Today, Martha’s Vineyard Real Estate & Martha’s Vineyard Home Rentals have a well-deserved reputation for integrity, commitment and a strong working knowledge of the island’s real estate market.

Skip Dostal

For the past 25 years, Skip has focused on delivering exceptional customer service, with more than 20 years active experience in real estate on Martha’s Vineyard. A graduate of Maryland’s Frostburg State University with a degree in Business Management, Skip and his wife, Susan, moved to the Vineyard in 1988. They live in Vineyard Haven with their three children – Lauren, Kyle and Julia, all born and raised on the island. Skip also has expertise in residential construction, and has built and sold many homes on the island. When he’s not showing property or researching the island’s ever-changing real estate market, Skip enjoys the diverse outdoor activities the Vineyard has to offer, including fishing, hiking, boating and tennis. He’s involved in Island sports as well, coaching his children’s soccer and basketball teams.

Joan Dunayer

Joan brings three decades of practical island living experience to her work at Martha’s Vineyard Real Estate. Joan graduated with a BA from Elms College in central Massachusetts, then earned a Master’s degree in American History from the University of Connecticut. She moved to the island in 1977, and taught in the Martha’s Vineyard school system for years before turning her attention to the business of island real estate. Joan is a member of the Cape Cod & Islands Board of Realtors, the Edgartown Board of Trade, and the Edgartown Mothers Club. Joan resides in Edgartown and has four grown children, one of whom owns the popular women’s clothing store, Pandora’s Box in Menemsha. An avid book club member, she also enjoys tennis and spending time with her two island granddaughters.
